YOUTH AMBASSADORS

Action Breaks Silence Youth Ambassador Programme.

The Action Breaks Silence Youth Ambassador Programme is designed, led and delivered by youth with an aim to take social action and lead the youth movement towards girls being free from all forms of gender-based violence, and from the threat of such violence, within schools and youth relationships. The programme allows progression to other opportunities and is embedded in young people's lives. Action Breaks Silence is a small charity, so the impact of the youth voice is not only needed, but will add significant value and impact to the charity as a whole.

  • Educate: raising awareness of what happens surrounding gender-based violence within young people’s lives, and educating those within their school, including conversations with parents/caregivers. This can be done through social media or simply through arranging a safe place for open discussions. The youth ambassadors will also lead on evolving all Action Breaks Silence Programmes to ensure they are currant and youth relevant.

The youth ambassadors will also be actively involved in the M & E of Action Breaks Silence Programmes.

  • Mentor: Youth Ambassador students will act as mentors for their fellow peers and younger students regarding issues such as sexual harassment or toxic masculinity, and will be leading the way as role models representing a safe space for those who need someone to speak to. These students must be someone who is widely recognised as someone approachable, kind and supportive.
  • Fundraising: Youth Ambassadors for Action Breaks Silence will be constantly encouraged to become fundraisers for the programmes we deliver. Each year they will facilitate fundraising workshops, which will be held at selected schools for both students and parents/caregivers to attend.
  • Support Instructors: for Action Breaks Silence Programmes: Youth Ambassadors are upskilled and invited to help within workshops and sessions that we run in other communities. This role will become a paid role after basic training. It will give our ambassadors an opportunity to break down race/gender/sexuality/religious stereotypes both within other communities and corporates.

Taya Blem - Lead International Youth Ambassador

I was born in the beautiful city of gold, Johannesburg South Africa, raised in Mnandi, and am now based in the United Kingdom. My diverse upbringing means that I naturally gravitate towards a life of activism and service.

I served as the Junior Mayor of Johannesburg, working alongside 83 dedicated social change makers. I used my platform as the Mayor to catalyse the liberation of the marginalized in my city as I am extremely passionate about the youth and their role in igniting social change. In South Africa, I serve as the Chairperson of the Alcove Youth Foundation, working on the overall development of the youth throughout South Africa. I took part in launching the 1000 Girls Campaign, a project that provides 1000 refugee girls with reusable sanitary pads, in which I headed the PR and Marketing team.

I am honoured to have been announced as one of South Africa’s top 100 Ambassadors for 2020. As the Head of Action Breaks Silence International Youth Programme, I aim to create a platform for the youth to take a stand against Gender-Based Violence and to constructively use their voices to change our society at large. I am dedicated to creating a future that represents all people, protects all people, and empowers all people.
